Air freight or sea freight: what should you compare?

Start with what the shipment needs rather than choosing a transport mode from a headline price. The practical comparison is between available quotations for the same goods and the same agreed destination service.

Define the requirement first

Record the packed size, weight, piece count and date the goods will be ready. Explain any deadline and specialist handling needs. Ask which transport options are actually available and suitable for the contents and route.

If you are comparing air and sea quotations, confirm that both cover equivalent collection and destination arrangements. An airport-to-airport quote cannot be compared directly with one that includes collection, clearance support and delivery.

Compare more than transport price

  • The complete estimated journey and the stages it covers.
  • Acceptance and packaging requirements for the goods.
  • Minimum charges and the measurement method used.
  • Origin and destination handling, storage conditions and delivery scope.
  • Cover options and any charges not included in the quotation.

Ask Goldcross about the available service

Our UK team can discuss air freight and your wider shipment requirements. Sea freight availability is not confirmed by this comparison guide; ask before making plans around a particular mode. Do not assume every destination has both options.

Keep the final decision tied to a written quotation that reflects the goods you will send. If timing is flexible, explain that; if a deadline is essential, ask whether the proposed arrangement can meet it before booking.
