What to check before packing restricted items

Before packing, describe everything you intend to send. Items that seem ordinary at home can require special handling or be unacceptable for the proposed shipment. The cargo team must confirm acceptance before handover.

Look inside the item, not just at its name

A device may contain a battery, a machine may contain a liquid and packaging may include a refrigerant. Identify these details when you describe the goods. Do not use general descriptions such as accessories or household items for contents that need a specific check.

The Goldcross dangerous and prohibited goods page contains the business's declaration wording. Read it alongside the instructions for your actual shipment. This guide does not replace that policy or provide permission to send an item.

Questions to resolve with the team

  • Is the item accepted on the proposed route and service?
  • What information about the battery, liquid or other material is needed?
  • Are specialist preparation, documents or procedures required?
  • What additional charges, if any, would apply?
  • Has acceptance been confirmed before collection?

Do not pack first and declare later

Give the team time to assess unusual contents before you seal or hand over the shipment. If you are unsure what is inside a product, obtain the manufacturer's information rather than guessing. Do not remove labels or disguise goods to avoid a restriction.

If the contents change after a quote is prepared, tell the team and ask them to check again. Destination restrictions and transport acceptance are separate questions; an answer about one does not automatically resolve the other.
