A student's checklist for shipping belongings abroad

Moving into or out of student accommodation can involve different departure and receiving dates. Plan the shipment around when your belongings are ready and when someone can receive them.

Decide what to send separately

Keep passports, travel documents, essential medication and items needed during your journey with you as appropriate. Ask the team about anything valuable or restricted before including it in a shipment. Do not assume electronics or batteries can travel without an acceptance check.

Make an inventory before packing. It can help you decide what needs shipping and identify the contents of each package later. Give books and other dense items suitable packaging rather than overloading a single container.

Coordinate the two ends

  • Confirm when your accommodation allows collection and whether access restrictions apply.
  • Give a receiving address where someone will be available.
  • Check whether the destination can accept parcels or cargo on your behalf.
  • Measure and weigh the finished packages.
  • Ask for shipment-specific documents and the full quotation scope.

Leave room for confirmation

Request a current delivery estimate before arranging an onward collection or assuming items will arrive before a term date. Tell the provider if the receiving address is temporary and ask what happens if you need to change it.

Student status does not itself confirm a discount, import exemption or special allowance. Goldcross quotes each enquiry individually. Keep the written instructions and ask the team about anything you do not understand before handover.

Plan your next step

Excess baggage

Check dangerous and prohibited goods before packing.

Check before you pack.
