How to prepare excess baggage for shipping

Good preparation starts before the box is sealed. Check the contents with the cargo team, agree suitable packaging and keep an inventory that lets you identify what is in each piece.

Check the contents first

Separate anything that may need an acceptance check, including electrical devices, batteries, liquids and aerosols. Do not assume that an item allowed in passenger luggage can be placed in an unaccompanied cargo shipment. Use the Goldcross dangerous-goods information and ask before handing anything over.

Keep essential travel documents and items you need during the journey with you. Ask about transporting valuables before packing them. Never hide undeclared contents inside clothing, appliances or other items.

Prepare each piece

  • Ask which box, suitcase or other packaging is acceptable for the contents and route.
  • Use appropriate cushioning and prevent items moving around inside.
  • Number each package and keep a matching inventory.
  • Label the pieces as instructed, avoiding unnecessary personal information on display.
  • Photograph the packed arrangement for your own records and measure each finished piece.

Check before handover

Review the inventory against the packed pieces and update your enquiry if anything changes. Confirm the package count, collection arrangements and recipient contact details. If an item needs specialist packing, arrange that before collection rather than relying on a label such as fragile.

Keep a copy of the agreed instructions and quotation. Packaging does not make a prohibited item acceptable, and declaring a restricted item does not by itself confirm that it can be carried.
